Happy Anniversary to Moto Guzzi!
On this date in 1921, Moto Guzzi was founded on Corso Aurelio Saffi in Genova, Italy! In celebration of this iconic brand, let’s take a look back at its history and an exciting model of today. Carlo Guzzi, the founder of Moto Guzzi was born in Milan in 1889. After moving to Mandello del Lario, Carlo spent years developing his skills at a vehicle shop, and in a luxury brand’s driving department before World War I. When World War I began, Carlo enlisted in the Royal Marines where he was an engineer and befriended pilots Giovanni Ravelli and Giorgio Parodi, who shared his passion for engines and motorcycles. When the time came post-war to start his own company, Carlo took his expertise and passion, and turned it into Moto Guzzi! He partnered with Giorgio and his father who was a well-regarded businessman. Carlo and Giorgio honored their late friend Giovanni Ravelli who had passed away years prior by making Moto Guzzi’s logo the eagle, in tribute to him.
After its founding, Carlo and his partners quickly got to work designing, developing, and producing their first motorcycle, the GP 500, in their Mandello del Lario base. With great success, the company grew to hundreds of employees and built over one thousand motorcycles in less than five years. By the year 1934, Moto Guzzi had become Italy’s largest manufacturer of motorcycles and solidified itself as a force in the industry. The organization also experienced a period of on-track success with various models including the Moto Guzzi Twin, which has become one of the most popular models, and was very advanced when it hit the scene. Moto Guzzi has always been strongly motivated by and focused on innovation. This drive has been carried out in a variety of ways throughout their existence, including after World War II. When the war ended Carlo spearheaded construction of two electric energy plants, a radio link connecting the headquarters to their Milan and Genoa bases, a factory-based fuel station, and most innovative of all - the wind tunnel! At the direction of Carlo, Giuseppe Guzzi designed what would become the first wind tunnel built in Europe. Not only that, it was the first in the entire world to be used for a motorcycle manufacturer! This creative and driven spirit has been at the core of all Moto Guzzi models, including the unique rides we see today. Here’s to 103 years of the Eagle!
